Two of the most commonly used foundation systems in India are open foundations and pile foundations. In open foundations, it is relatively easier to control the quality of construction. However when it comes to pile foundations, there are certain challenges in checking its integrity. It is critical to check if the length of the pile is as per the design or not. Similarly it needs to be confirmed that there is no bulging or necking in the pile anywhere along its length. Here is when pile integrity testing comes into play. This test allows one to check if there is any necking or bulging along the length of the pile. And if it is present what is the percentage deviation in terms of the piles cross sectional area. Any significant deviation in the length of the pile can also be determined using the pile integrity tests.

Many pile integrity testing companies provide this service using equipment from different international manufacturers. However due to a large variation in soil properties across project sites, it is of utmost importance that the plots obtained from the pile integrity test is interpreted correctly. This requires a good understanding of the behaviour of stress wave in the concrete and soil strata. Hence emphasis should be laid on a meaningful interpretation of the pile integrity test results rather than merely conducting the tests to obtain plots

Pile Load Testing Companies

The Indian standard IS 2911 code specifies that pile load testing shall be carried out on a minimum of 0.5% of the total piles in any project. Static load tests have generally been used to determine the safe compressive load capacity of the piles. However static load tests are very time consuming as well as uneconomical. Hence dynamic pile testing procedures are nowadays used to obtain safe load carrying capacity. Dynamic pile testing is much faster and economical compared to static testing.

Dynamic pile testing for up to 5-6 piles can be completed within a day compared to static tests where one test can take upto several days to complete. Pile Testing Agency

Pile testing is an important part of all projects where pile foundations are used. Since the condition of piles is not visible after construction, it becomes even more essential that pile tests are carried out on all projects.

In general there are three types of pile tests:
Compression Test (static and dynamic)
Pull out tests
Lateral load tests

Any good pile testing agency can carry out all these tests. It is up to the structural consultant to decide which test or tests are required for a particular project.

Compression tests on piles are usually required for such structures where the weight of the structure and the imposed load is high.

Pull out tests are more relevant in low weight structures with considerable wind loads where the tendency of the pile foundation is to be pulled out of the soil.
br /> Lateral load tests are useful in all structures where wind or seismic forces are applicable since these forces lead to horizontal forces in the pile.


Most of the construction in India, be it buildings, industries or bridges is done with concrete. However since concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, it is reinforced with steel reinforcing bars which have high tensile strength. This combination of concrete with steel reinforcement results in what is called a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structure.

A structural consultant not only designs all of the above but he or she is also entrusted with the job of ensuring that these structures are built safely.

A much higher percentage of buildings in India are now engineered prior to construction compared to about a century ago. However there is still a lot of non-engineered construction taking place in India, especially in smaller cities. Obviously such structures which are constructed based on a contractors discretion are much more susceptible to damage in seismic events.
